Behavior Plan

Mr. Yoder’s Classroom Management System

Whole Class Rewards

  • Classroom Scoreboard
    • Every few weeks, the class will have an opportunity to earn a reward as a whole class. They do this by winning a competition against the teacher on the scoreboard by earning more points. Small groups of students or the whole class can earn points for the class in such ways as:
      • Following directions in an excellent fashion.
      • Putting forth maximum effort throughout an entire activity.
      • Seamlessly transitioning from one activity to another.
      • Going out of their way to help one another.
      • Displaying a positive attitude throughout an entire learning activity.
    • The teacher can earn points when the whole class struggles in such ways as:
      • Following directions the first time.
      • Transitioning from one activity to another.
      • Working together in collaborative activities.
      • Giving consistent effort and maintaining a positive attitude throughout a learning activity.
    • If the class has more points than the teacher at the end of the 1-2 week period, they can earn various rewards such as:
      • Playing a favorite math game as a class.
      • Playing a favorite language arts game as a class.
      • Participating in a favorite brain break/movement activity.

Individual Rewards

  • On each student’s desk is a laminated chart with rows of empty squares. Students can receive smiley faces inside those squares from the teacher at various times throughout the day. Students can receive smiley faces for such reasons as:
    • Consistently following classroom procedures and rules.
    • Showing kindness and respect to peers.
    • Meeting personal academic and behavior goals.
    • Showing various leadership and citizenship qualities.
    • Maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Once the student fills up their chart, they can choose between various rewards such as:
    • Choosing an extra round of a preferred station during the guided reading block.
    • Eating lunch in the classroom
    • Teacher chair for the day.
    • Sharing time about a special book they are reading, something they have learned, or anything exciting going on in their lives.
    • Choose a the brain break/movement activity for the class
    • 10 minutes of computer time on Friday

Classroom Rules

  1. Follow directions quickly.
  2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
  3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
  4. Make smart choices.
  5. Help make everyone successful and happy.

Individual Consequences

  • When students struggle with following the classroom rules, a clear list of steps will be followed throughout the school day in the following order:
    • 1. A verbal warning to the student will be issued.
    • 2. The student will miss 10 minutes of recess.
    • 3. The student will miss the entire recess period.
    • 4. Contact with a guardian at home will be made.
    • 5. The student will be referred to the office or other consequences will be put in place after discussion with the guardian.
  • Students will keep track of where they are at in this sequence of consequences using a colored chart at the back of the room. If a student corrects their behavior in an exemplary way, they can clip their way back up the chart. Their names are not on their chart, only their class identification numbers.
  • A buddy room may be utilized if there are repeated issues and the student needs to be in a different environment for a short period of time.
  • Each day, the chart resets and students will have a clean slate and fresh start. No consequences from the previous day will carry over unless they are issued from the office after a referral.
  • If a student becomes a danger to his or her self or another student, they may be sent to the office immediately.
  • If a student becomes especially emotional he or she may utilize the calm down corner in the back of the room for a short break to refocus if needed.
